he Porsche Carrera is a 4 passenger, rear engine, all wheel drive sports car that is available as a coupe or a convertible. The Carrera 4 resides at the top of the Porsche line-up above both the 2 seater Boxster and the rear wheel drive Carrera. This permanent 4-wheel drive system distributes the majority of the engine power to the rear wheels unless it senses rear wheel slip. The amount of power sent to the front wheels then varies from 5 to 40 percent. The Carrera 4, like the Carrera, is a low volume sports car that is enjoying increased sales in a decreasing performance car market. The 911 Carrera 4 has been redesigned from the ground up for the 1999 model year. This new all wheel drive Carrera shares many design elements as well as mechanical and technological features with the Boxster. According to Porsche, the shared features include: "new liquid-cooled engines, brake systems and, clearly, a strong family resemblance." This family resemblance is most evident in the front views of both cars as they share the same headlight assemblies.

In addition to changing the engine to liquid cooling, the Carrera 4 incorporates a number of new features and improvements on familiar Porsche items. For the first time, the Tiptronic S automatic transmission is available on the Carrera 4. This transmission is a 5-speed unit that can operate in fully automatic mode or it may be used like a clutchless manual transmission for more spirited driving. The new engine includes VarioCam(tm) variable valve timing system, which increases torque and decreases engine emissions at the same time. The Cabriolet benefits from a fully electronic power soft top that can be raised or lowered by a dash-mounted switch or by turning the key in the door lock. Additionally, there is an aluminum hard top that comes as standard equipment. Though retaining a familiar shape and the renowned 911 rear engine/all wheel drive architecture, the all-new for 1999 Carrera 4 incorporates more technology and features than previously available on this capable sports car.
