with a ZX-9 I
was cruising down the Long Island Expressway last week and hooked up with
some guy on a ZX-9. It was a nice bike with some extras including a Vance
and Hines pipe which sounded pretty loud compared to my stock exhaust. Anyway, he rode beside me for a while but must have become impatient because he blasted off down the road. I figured this might be a good time to see what potential the 1000R was hiding and caught up to him. We were doing about 75 when I tooted the horn and beckoned him to follow. I rolled to about 3/4 throttle, no downshift, and checked my mirror to see that he was keeping with me. He was right on my tail so I assumed this bike was worthy of a comparison. As I hit 95 (lots of cops here towards the end of the month) I backed off and he blew by me. I didn't like that at all. : > He eventually slowed down and I caught him. I positioned myself into "the flow" at which point we were doing about 70. This time he tooted his horn, I looked over and shook my head. I saw him tuck and heard his bike scream so I am assuming he was pushing it. I quickly tucked behind the cowling, downshifted and twisted every last ounce of throttle there was. Within what must have been 3 or 4 seconds, I passed him and watched as he became a dot in the mirror. (talk about an evil grin!) At around what I think was 130 (lots of wind and vibration), I decided enough was enough and backed out. He caught, and passed me but I had gleaned what I wanted to out of the deal and just layed low. So, what does this mean? I dunno... could be many things. Maybe he's not a great rider? (he seemed pretty competent) Maybe his bike isn't running great? Or maybe, just maybe, it means this R can toast a ZX-9 without too much of a struggle. |
